Son Little – Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches

I’ve been following Son Little, aka Aaron Livingston, for a while now. I tried to book him for BlackjackLDN earlier this year after hearing his last single – ‘Cross My Heart’ – when it came out in December on Anti Records. It has this sweet throwback groove to it and is a real antidote to the swathe of contemporary ‘soul’ singers currently doing the rounds. It’s worth a listen so check it out here –

His latest offering – ‘Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches’ – actually came out the end of last month but sadly seems like it’s being slept on. This is more of a modern, pain-fuelled ballad with a flicker of hip-hop sensibility. Think The Weeknd with more soul and less pretence. Livingston’s vocal performance has such quality it evokes real imagery from the lyric, and when partnered with his scratchy, alt-hiphop productions, makes for a powerful combination.

The Son Little debut album is due to drop later this year so keep an eye on him if Aloe Blacc & Jermain Jackman just don’t do it for ya.

SOHN – Lights (4AD Session) / Tremors

In case you’ve been asleep all week, the superb SOHN released his debut album ‘Tremors’ this week on 4AD. As part of the promo  he recorded a series of live session videos; an example of which you can see above.

About this time last year I went out to Berlin to meet SOHN and see a show. We ate pizza together and laughed about football – well, he is from Charlton after all. He’s a lovely guy and very unassuming for a musician. I got the feeling that he’s a bit of an outlier and I think that comes across in his music. Definatley an album worth owning.
